Redeeming Hope: A Review
On Sunday, November 16, 2014, Fishnet Theatre performed a play in Skykomish titled Redeeming Hope. This hospital drama took a look at some real life concerns about pain and suffering, heaven and hell, internal struggles, doubt, and how to share our faith in Jesus Christ with those around us. The audience experienced times of laughter and tears throughout the play and, like all of the other Fishnet Theatre performances presented in Skykomish, Redeeming Hope was well received.
One thing that stood out was the attitude that the Christian characters portrayed toward those who didn’t share their faith. For the most part, they seemed condescending and confused as to why others would resist faith in Jesus. At times the Christians seemed to be taking on a bit of a martyr complex when it was more likely that people were responding negatively to their personalities and not rejecting faith in Jesus on its face. The Christian nurse wavered between disrespect to the doctor and her patients and doubt when conversing with other Christians. The hospital chaplain expressed disdain for the doctor and physically got in the way of care givers while they attempted to revive a heart attack victim.
As the play progressed, a young child with cancer demonstrated Christian character traits that were endearing and winsome. She humbly lived out her faith with love and concern for others and showed more grace than was deserved. Her mother and her physician were both visibly touched by her simple childlike faith and the manner she chose to demonstrate God’s love.
Redeeming Hope gave a picture of how God uses flawed and imperfect individuals to share Gospel in an imperfect world. It is comforting to know that even my wrong actions and blemished character can be used by Holy Spirit to draw others to Him. Our hope is in Jesus Christ, our Redeemer.
